What is the L.E.G.S.® Model? A Beginner’s Guide for Dog Owners

The L.E.G.S.® Model is an innovative, scientific based approach to understanding dog behavior by looking at the whole dog, not just their actions, but the full story behind those actions. L.E.G.S.® represents “Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self”, and each part plays a critical role in shaping how a dog interacts with the world and the people in it.

Understanding Each Part of L.E.G.S.®

  • Learning: Every dog has a learning history, from puppy experiences to daily routines. Habits, both helpful and challenging, are built over time.
  • Environment: Where a dog lives, the people and animals around them, and their day-to-day surroundings can influence everything from confidence to stress levels.
  • Genetics: While every dog is unique, breed tendencies and inherited traits often shape natural inclinations, energy levels, and reactions to life’s challenges.
  • Self: The individuality of each dog, their specific personality, likes, dislikes, and emotional status can’t be overlooked.

Why LEGS Matters for Dog Owners

Using the L.E.G.S.® model helps owners move beyond “fixing” a behavior to understanding the “why” behind it. When people see their dogs as whole individuals, training and relationship-building become more effective and compassionate. The L.E.G.S.® model encourages owners to meet their dogs’ needs at every level, leading to happier pets and more harmonious homes.

Whether working through behavioral issues or just wanting to know a beloved companion better, L.E.G.S.® offers a framework for truly understanding what makes every dog unique.

This is important information for EVERY dog owner to help their dog learn to navigate in OUR world while we learn how to navigate and provide for DOG welfare; their way of (and history of) Learning, their Environmental perspective, their Genetics by understanding how that unique genetic blueprint impacts behavior choices, and their unique Self.

In coming posts, we will do a deeper dive into what all of this really means and how it can positively impact you, and your dog’s world and how we use L.E.G.S.® in our Border Collie HQ consultation practice.
